Located on the east side of the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County, Bald Head Island is a quick 20-minute ferry ride away. Leave your car and your stress behind as you enter this luxury island destination away from the North Carolina mainland. A remote village off the shore of Brunswick county, the area is small and only accessible with a shorty ferry ride out of Southport. The island hosts very few vehicles and instead, residents use modified golf carts.
Historically, Bald Head Island was known as Smith Island, and played a part in two American wars. Home to Fort George, a British built fort, that was used during the American Revolution and the Civil War. Throughout early history of the Cape Fear region, Bald Head Island went through many attempts of settlers, leading to many names over time. Although the name of the island varied, the region was always known by the historically earned name of "Cape Fear."
Due to the trecherous conditions of Cape Fear, especially the shoal called "Frying-Pan," a light house was commissioned to help naviagte incoming vessels into the river. Over time due to errosion, and the eventual building of the Oak Island Light, "Old Baldy' was officially decommissioned. Still standing today, "Old Baldy" is the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina. Having stood through many years of war, weather, and neglect it is officially on the National Registry of Historic Places that is open to the public.
